Weight Limitations

AXLE WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS IN TANZANIA ROADS

The axle weight restrictions on the roads of East Africa are very strictly adhered to by the Government agencies to avoid potential damage to the roads. The law that governs the axle weight is under section 114 (1) p of the Road Traffic Act, 1973 and the subsequent Government Notice No. 30, published on 9/2/2001. These Regulations shall apply to all vehicles of 3,500 Kg permissible weight or above. The highlights of the regulations are as below:

1. The overall dimensions of motor vehicle and trailers including when laden does not exceed the following specification:

a. Overall Width 2.6 M
b. Overall Height 4.6 m from the road surface
c. Overall length of rigid vehicle 12.5 M
d. Overall length of articulated vehicles 17.0 M
e. Overall length of any combination of vehicles 22.0 M

2. The allowable axle weight is governed by the type of vehicles and its axle configuration

3. For transportation of any dimensions which exceeds those given in 1, an abnormal permit to be obtained from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development. See below for the Abnormal / Wide load permit categories.

The allowable axle weight of a 6X4 truck articulated with 3 axle semi-trailer is graphically shown below:

Sum total of allowed Axle Weight: 50,000 Kg
Approximate tare weight of truck/ Trailer: 22,000 Kg
Allowable payload: 28,000 Kg

Any additional load on the axle shall attract overload penalty to be payable to the Ministry. Please contact us if you would like to know more about the axle weight restrictions in East Africa.
